What if I Want to Workout but I’m Injured?

Whether you are currently working out or want to start exercising, an injury can feel like a major setback. But while healing from an injury does come with limitations, there are still ways to keep moving and maintain the strength you’ve gained or start accomplishing those fitness goals.

First, you always want to make sure you have clearance from your doctor and have discussed exercise with your physical therapist (if you have one). Safety is always number one, and you want to make sure you are exercising in a way that will help you heal your injury and not potentially make it worse.

Always let your trainer know about your injury and what your doctor and physical therapist says/recommends. Our trainers at Live Fit can help you complete your exercises/stretches from physical therapy, which will also help us know what muscles may need extra attention, whether that’s building more strength or releasing tension. We can then modify your workouts to accommodate your injury. Torn your meniscus in your knee? We can focus on corework, upper body, and ways to stabilize your knee. Golfer’s elbow? We can focus on lower body and corework.

Keep in mind that some injuries/surgeries do require you to take a break from working out. But don’t let that discourage you! Taking care of your body by resting, eating healthy, and staying hydrated is just as important as breaking a sweat in the gym. Don’t think of it as a setback, but instead think of it as your body telling you that you need a break!

Lastly, remember that no injury is too small to mention to your personal trainer. Things like sore knees, a tight neck, or a stiff lower back are always important things to mention during any workout session. We always want your workout to be pain-free (except the “how much longer do I have to hold this plank?!” kinda pain) and do what we can to prevent any minor aches and pains from turning into something major.
